On October 24, 2011, Jay Curtis hosted Paola Gomez, Robert Gearhart, Mike Hiller, Bre Johnson, Shaina Smith, and Alexandra Lopez, six of the twelve current recipients of Rotary Vocational Scholarships. Four of the recipients shared their story.
  • Robert (Rob) Gearhart is a nursing student working towards his Associate Degree in Nursing at Elgin Community College. Rob, an entrepreneur at heart, plans to integrate innovation and technology into his future healthcare career. Rob received a district scholarship in addition to the club scholarship.
  • Michael Hiller, a culinary student at Elgin Community College came bearing gifts--a delicious cake that he baked for the membership. Michael is pursuing a degree in both pastry and culinary arts. Michael says, "many options have opened up for me since receiving the scholarship. I am now working as a stadium chef for the Bears." Giving back what has been given to him, Mike volunteers for Share Our Strength, End World Hunger.
  • Paola Gomez also a nursing student at Elgin Community College wants to focus her healthcare career on nutrition. An Associate Degree in Nursing will be Paola's second degree as she also has a Bachelor of Science in Business.
  • Bre Johnsonanother district and club scholarship recipient, is a third semester nursing student at Elgin Community College. After graduation, Bre plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Northern Illinois University.

In 2012, the club plans to award $25,000 in scholarships.
